Scotland’s First Floating Solar Powers Through Storm Éowyn

The Met Office described Storm Éowyn as ‘probably the strongest to hit the UK in the past 10 years’. At its peak, it left more than one million people without power as hurricane-strength winds battered the country, bringing widespread disruption as it blew through Scotland, Ireland and various parts of the UK. However, amid the extreme local conditions, Nova’s floating solar electricity generation system continued to deliver clean, reliable power to Forth Ports HQ in the Port of Leith.

Since 2023, the demonstrator has faced over a dozen named storms, with Storm Éowyn being the harshest test yet – with no storm damage. With availability of 100% to date, the floating solar technology is a testament to Nova’s robust design.

As climate change leads to more extreme weather events, designing renewable energy technologies that can endure these conditions is increasingly vital.

This latest reliability milestone further solidifies Nova’s position at the forefront of delivering clean, secure and cost-effective floating solar power stations.
